This chapter explains when and how to use safety signs in your workplace to comply with your obligations under health and safety legislation in all jurisdictions.

Why should you use safety signs?

Safety signs are an important part of your safety management system.

Definition: Safety Sign

A safety sign is a sign that provides a specific message to people who may be exposed to a hazard in the workplace.

Safety signs are designed to:

  • warn people of hazards;
  • communicate important instructions;
  • reinforce safety messages; and
  • provide instructions for emergency situations, e.g. emergency exit routes.
Important: You have an obligation under health and safety legislation to use signs where practicable to highlight a serious hazard or risk in your workplace.
