Teacher fined $55,000 following drowning of two students

The Case

WorkSafe Qld v Shinri Minatoya (2024)

In 2019, a group of 15 from a high school in Japan visited K’gari (also known as Fraser Island) in a tour organised by an Australian tour company. During the trip, the students all went swimming in Lake McKenzie while the defendant, their teacher, and one other teacher waited by the lakeshore. There was signage that warned against swimming in the lake.

At some point, the defendant noticed that two 16-year-old students were missing. These students were later found deceased from drowning by police divers.
