Shortcut to $255,000 fine for greyhound racing body

Case

Farrell v Greyhound Racing SA Limited (2025)

In September 2022, Greyhound Racing SA Limited, the controlling body for greyhound racing in South Australia, held greyhound trial races at its Angle Park track.

At the conclusion of one of the trial races, a greyhound handler walked a commonly used shortcut across the track to the catching pen to collect his greyhound. The handler was near the catching pen when he was struck by a 28-kilogram mechanical lure that was passing at 70 kilometres per hour. As a result, the handler sustained leg, hand and facial injuries, requiring hospital treatment, including surgery.
