Hospitality worker falls more than 5 metres from grandstand

SafeWork NSW v The Illawarra Turf Club Ltd (2026)

The Illawarra Turf Club operated a racecourse with a 2-storey grandstand. A hospitality worker at the Club was asked to assist the maintenance manager with placing some aluminium sheets over part of the roof of the grandstand.

There was no:

  • fall protection installed on the grandstand roof or around the perimeter of the roof; or
  • edge protection, such as barricades or secured guardrails.
