Company’s safety system found to be seriously deficient

The Case

SafeWork NSW v Voltex Trading Pty Ltd (2023)

Voltex Trading Pty Ltd (Voltex) operates a business installing solar photo-voltaic (PV) systems at commercial and residential premises. Voltex was engaged by Bell Solar Pty Ltd (Bell) to complete an installation for Wesley Westcott.

Voltex engaged a sole trader, Mr Ouchenir, to install the solar panels on a shearing shed roof.

Mr Ouchenir accessed the roof using a ladder. During the installation, he stepped onto one of the skylights, which gave way under his weight. The skylight was discoloured and covered in dirt, and thus difficult to see on the roof.
