Company fined $100,000 for failing to control electrical hazard

The Case

WorkSafe Victoria v Metro Trains Melbourne Pty Ltd (2022)

Metro Trains Melbourne Pty Ltd (MTM) engaged Laing O’Rourke Australia Construction Pty Ltd (LORAC) to undertake electrical works in the Glen Waverley trains corridor in preparation for the introduction of new high-capacity trains.

LORAC provided a work pack detailing the electrical upgrade to be conducted at the Glenferrie Road Tram Square site. The work pack contained a sectionalised diagram showing an incorrectly marked electrical connection, with the powerline passing over Glenferrie Road rather than its actual path through Structure 219.
